RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS
POSITION: Usher
GOAL: To help prepare for worship, maintain order and decency, as host for God, do the work of evangelism and promote public relations
REPORTS TO: Worship and Music Committee
RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS

Report and be ready for service fifteen (15) minutes before starting time of service.

Open doors, turn on lights, check on heating or cooling and ventilation as appropriate

Inspect for housekeeping deficiencies and correct before the Service begins

Turn on the tape recorder at the 9:30 a.m. service.

Welcome visitors, make them feel at home and see that they sign the guest book
-
See that an atmosphere of reverence and order is maintained before, during and after the service.

Look after the comforts and needs of all the worshippers.

Stand at the main sanctuary doors, greet everyone as they arrive, hand them a Service Folder, and open the door.

As the church fills with worshipers, take the initiative and escort people to vacant seats
-
Remember there are circumstances in which you must explain why certain seats are not available.

Latecomers should be held in the rear (in the narthex) if the Service had already started. They should be quietly ushered to their seats at these times:
- After the Pronouncement of Forgiveness of Sin
- During the Kyrie
- During the O.T. Canticle
- Between the O.T. Lesson and the Psalm

Attendance is taken as unobtrusively as possible by the ushers.

If a Baptism is to be performed, the baptism party is usually escorted to the pew closest to the Baptismal Font before service begins or during a proper break in the Service.

During Communion the Communicants will approach the rail from the center aisle and return to their seats via the side aisle.

Ushers may direct Communicants left for right to assure an even and efficient flow of communicants.

After Holy Communion, the offering plates are taken to the rear and handed to the Chief Teller.

After the Benediction and when the Recessional starts, the ushers open the main doors to the Narthex.

Publications, pamphlets and other literature may be handed out at this time.

The Ushers should straighten-up hymnals and Bibles. All loose papers and Service Folders should be removed.

After the last service of the day, ushers need to closed up the facilities; turn off lights, shut off air conditioner, fans and when appropriate turn down the heat, and make security check of the building, locking doors and windows.

Head Usher attends Worship and Music Committee meetings.
