RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS

Position: Treasurer

Reports To: Church Council

Responsibilities & Expectations:

  • Maintains true, accurate and timely records of the church finances according to acceptable recommended accounting procedures.
  • Suggest through the Finance Committee, for congregational consideration, improved methods and systems for keeping financial records.
  • Identifies and creates an appropriate account to post Billing statements and Invoices.
  • Maintains checks & balances and security procedures to prevent theft or fraud. Reports any and all suspicious activity to the Pastor, and the Finance Committee Chairperson and the President of the Church Council immediately. Provides a written record for the file.
  • Maintain finance and contribution software programs.
  • Submits records for internal and external audits as requested and assists auditors as required. Responds to any concerns identified in an audit.
  • Provides reports as required by the Council and Committees in the format requested. Provides commentary to assist in understanding the factors influencing the values reported.
  • Serves on the Finance Committee and assist in budget preparation as needed.
  • Is appropriately discreet in discussing the financial affairs of the church.
  • Verify all bills for accuracy.
  • Pays the bills on a timely basis to preserve the integrity of the church. Is particularly attentive to salary and benefits payments and reimbursements to congregation members.
  • Prepare, distribute and appropriately file all year-end payroll forms for employees and non-employees as necessary.
  • Notifies the Finance Committee Chairperson of impending cash flow issues to obtain guidance in the payment process.
  • Enforces compliance with directives and rules established by Council, e.g. support for requests for payment, etc. Refers questions to the Finance Committee chairperson.
  • Maintains neat and orderly records and files.
  • Work with the Church Secretary.
  • Be responsible with the Finance Committee for the congregation's investments.
  • Establishes a schedule for check writing that allows authorized signatures to be provided in a timely and secure manner.
  • Signs all checks for payment of bills, salaries, or other financial commitments of the congregation of any sort.
  • Serve as a voting member of the Council.
